The Jesus Saviour Church Summer Bazaar is often referred to, tongue-in-cheek, as the "Portuguese World's Fair of Newport". It is a big social event on the Jesus Saviour calendar and has been an enormously popular family outing for the decades that it has been offered. Folks from the surrounding area look forward to it each year. This event is held during the last weekend in July, starting on Thursday night, in the large church parking lot on Vernon Avenue in Newport. Many game booths and food concessions are available, including games and prizes for the little ones. A large, lighted tent offers the ever-popular "lap card party". Nightly cash prize drawings are held, and a grand prize drawing is held on Saturday night. The permanent kitchen on the grounds offers mouth-watering specialties, including chourico sandwiches and sumptuous fava beans. Hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, malassadas, cotton candy, soft drinks and beer are also available. It's good fun for the whole family and a great opportunity to enjoy a warm summer evening, meet old friends and socialize. We hope to see you here! |

Bazaar setup is quite a project, usually requiring a couple of evenings. The following time-lapse movie captured the Monday-night setup for the 2001 bazaar. (The movie file is approximately 1MB long, so please be patient.) |
